Speed up Coursera videos past 2x.
Coursera's player maxes out at 2x. If you're reviewing material you already understand, or powering through a specialization, that's not fast enough. PlayFaster removes the cap — watch lectures at 3x, 4x, or any speed up to 42x.

Why is Coursera capped at 2x?
Coursera's built-in video player offers speed options from 0.75x to 2x. Unlike some compliance training platforms, Coursera doesn't actively enforce this limit — it simply doesn't provide a faster option in the UI. There's no page reload or speed check running in the background.
For many learners, 2x is fine. But if you're reviewing lectures before an exam, brushing up on fundamentals you already know, or binging a specialization on a deadline, 2x still feels slow. Especially for professors who speak slowly or repeat points across slides.
How PlayFaster removes the cap
PlayFaster overrides the browser's playbackRate property at the HTMLMediaElement.prototype level. This means it works regardless of what speed options Coursera's UI offers — your browser plays the video at whatever rate you set, while Coursera's player still reads a normal value.
No console commands, no developer tools, no reloading the page. Just set your speed in the PlayFaster popup and keep watching.
PlayFaster also enforces preservesPitch, so lectures stay intelligible at high speeds — voices sound natural, not sped-up.
Step by step
- Install PlayFaster from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons.
- Open any Coursera lecture — free courses, paid specializations, and Coursera Plus content all work the same way.
- Click the PlayFaster icon in your browser toolbar. Set your speed using the arrow buttons, the scroll wheel, or by typing a value directly.
- That's it. The lecture plays at your chosen speed. Subtitles still sync. Progress still tracks.
Does it work with Coursera's subtitles?
Yes. Coursera's subtitles are tied to the video timeline, not a fixed clock. When you speed up the video, subtitles appear at the right moment — they just go by faster. The same is true for the interactive transcript on the side panel.
Will Coursera know I'm watching faster?
No. PlayFaster spoofs the playback rate at the browser level. Coursera's player reads a normal value, and video completion is tracked as usual. Your progress, certificates, and quiz eligibility are not affected by playback speed.
Frequently asked questions
Is PlayFaster free?
Yes. Completely free, no account, no subscription. Settings stay on your device, and the extension contains no analytics or telemetry.
What speed works best for Coursera lectures?
Most people find 2.5x to 3.5x comfortable for review material. For dense or unfamiliar topics, 2x to 2.5x keeps things comprehensible. PlayFaster lets you fine-tune in 0.1x increments.
Does it work on the Coursera mobile app?
No. PlayFaster is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox. It works on Coursera's website, not the mobile app.
Will the audio sound distorted?
No. PlayFaster enforces pitch preservation, so voices stay natural even at 4x or higher.
