Speed up Udemy videos past 2x.
Udemy's player maxes out at 2x. If you're reviewing a course you've already taken, skimming sections before an exam, or powering through a sale haul, that's not fast enough. PlayFaster removes the cap — watch at 3x, 4x, or any speed up to 42x.

Why is Udemy capped at 2x?
Udemy's built-in video player offers preset speeds: 0.5x, 0.75x, 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x, and 2x. That's it. The player simply doesn't offer a faster option. There's no active enforcement — no page reload, no speed check, no background monitoring. It's just a UI limitation.
For many learners, 2x is enough. But Udemy's catalog is massive, and heavy users often own dozens of courses. Reviewing material you already understand, scanning through introductory lectures, or revisiting a course before a job interview — these are situations where 3x or 4x would save real time.
How PlayFaster removes the cap
PlayFaster overrides the playbackRate property at the browser level, beneath Udemy's player. When you set a speed in PlayFaster, the browser plays the video at that rate regardless of what Udemy's speed menu offers.
PlayFaster also spoofs the playbackRate getter so Udemy's player reads a normal value — no UI glitches, no error states, no unexpected pauses.
Pitch preservation is enforced automatically, so instructors sound natural even at high speeds.
Step by step
- Install PlayFaster from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons.
- Open any Udemy lecture — free courses, paid courses, and Udemy Business content all work.
- Click the PlayFaster icon in your browser toolbar. Set your speed using the arrow buttons, the scroll wheel, or by typing a value directly.
- That's it. The lecture plays at your chosen speed. Progress tracking and completion certificates work as normal.
Will my Udemy progress still be tracked?
Yes. Udemy tracks whether you've watched a lecture to completion, not how fast you watched it. Your course progress bar, lecture checkmarks, and completion certificates are all recorded normally. Quizzes and coding exercises are also unaffected — PlayFaster only controls video and audio playback speed.
Does it work with Udemy Business?
Yes. Udemy Business (the enterprise version that companies buy for employee training) uses the same video player as the consumer site. PlayFaster works identically on both — it operates at the browser level and doesn't interact with account types or SSO authentication.
Frequently asked questions
Is PlayFaster free?
Yes. Completely free, no account, no subscription. Settings stay on your device, and the extension contains no analytics or telemetry.
What speed works best for Udemy courses?
For review or familiar material, 2.5x to 4x is comfortable. For new technical content, 2x to 2.5x keeps things clear. PlayFaster lets you fine-tune in 0.1x increments — find what works for each instructor's speaking pace.
Does it work on the Udemy mobile app?
No. PlayFaster is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox. It works on Udemy's website, not the mobile app.
Will the audio sound distorted?
No. PlayFaster enforces pitch preservation, so instructors sound natural even at 4x or higher.
